Safety in tunnel

Tecnologie, Innovazione e Sicurezza

To ensure compliance with EU and Italian regulations and in line with the ongoing work required by the aforementioned regulations, Autostrade per l'Italia has implemented additional safety standards in certain tunnels across its network. These measures have been put in place to safeguard the well-being of both customers traveling through the tunnels and those working within them.

This includes, for example, the introduction of specific speed limits and minimum spacing between vehicles, indicated by special signs along the route.

We would like to remind you that in the event of an emergency in the tunnel, it is necessary to contact the single emergency number 112.

To receive real-time traffic information, please contact the call centre at 803.111.

Here are some indications on how to deal with the different situations that might occur in the tunnel.

1 - STALLED VEHICLE

In the event of a stalled vehicle in a tunnel:

1
SWITCH ON THE HAZARD LIGHTS
2
STOP AT THE FIRST AVAILABLE PITCH
3
ALTERNATIVELY, STOP IN THE EMERGENCY LANE OR ON THE RIGHT-HAND SIDE OF THE CARRIAGEWAY
4
SWITCH OFF THE ENGINE BUT LEAVE THE KEYS IN THE IGNITION
5
WEAR A safety vest
6
INSTALL THE Vehicle Breakdown SIGN AND CALL 112

Alternatively, paying attention to the traffic, walk along the pavement or the quay, reach the SOS pillar and ask for help.

2 - QUEUE IN TUNNEL AND BLOCKED TRAFFIC

In the event of queues or blocked traffic inside a tunnel, to ensure greater safety for all:

1
SWITCH ON THE HAZARD LIGHTS
2
ALWAYS LEAVE THE WAY CLEAR FOR ANY EMERGENCY VEHICLES
3
SWITCH OFF THE ENGINE AND DO NOT GET OUT OF THE VEHICLE

Above all, never turn around or reverse.

3 - ARROW/CROSS SIGNAL

At the entrance to most tunnels along the network, the Arrow/Cross light signals are active. A green arrow indicates that the lane is passable; a red cross means that the lane is not passable due to stopped vehicles, accidents or work; therefore, it is necessary to change lanes.

If all lanes display the red cross symbol, the tunnel is not passable and therefore one must stop safely, without entering.

4 - SAFETY SIGNS

When entering the tunnel:

1
CHECK THAT THE dipped headlights ARE ON
2
REMOve SUNGLASSES
3
PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO ARROW/CROSS SIGNALS OR VARIABLE MESSAGE SIGNS, IF ANY

Use the radio for up-to-date traffic information.

5 - TUNNEL BEHAVIOUR

To travel through a tunnel in a safely manner:

1
ALWAYS KEEP AN APPROPRIATE DISTANCE FROM THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF YOU
2
DO NOT EXCEED THE SPEED LIMIT
3
IDENTIFY SOS POSTS AND EMERGENCY EXITS
4
NEVER REVERSE OR BACK UP

Stop only in case of dire need, switching on the hazard lights, and drive to the first available pitch. Alternatively, move to the emergency lane.

6 - EMERGENCY EXITS AND WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF FIRE

In the tunnels, there are emergency exits to reach the other tunnel or safe places to await the arrival of rescuers. In case of fire:

1
SWITCH ON HAZARD LIGHTS
2
STOP THE VEHICLE AS FAR AS POSSIBLE FROM THE VEHICLE ON FIRE
3
DO NOT turn the vehicle around or REVERSE
4
MOVE AWAY FROM THE VEHICLE WITHOUT DELAYING RETRIEVING PERSONAL BELONGINGS AND FOLLOW THE SIGNS TO REACH THE EMERGENCY EXITS
5
ALWAYS PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO PASSING VEHICLES
6
CONTACT THE OPERATIONS ROOM, VIA THE SOS COLUMNS OR CALL 112, GIVING ALL NECESSARY INFORMATION.
