Description of the project

The project forms part of Autostrade per l’Italia’s broader investment plan, and specifically regards the section of the A1 between the Florence South and Incisa Valdarno junctions.

Four continuous interventions are to take place on the same section (Lot 1N, Lot 2B, Lot 1 and Lot 2), resulting in the upgrade of approximately 45 km of infrastructure. This will enable the motorway to handle current and future volumes of traffic, ensuring that the infrastructure is capable of meeting the highest safety standards.

Lot 1 North

The widening to three lanes of Lot 1 North (Lot 1N), between km 300+749 (the Florence South junction) and km 306+986 (the location of the San Giorgio viaduct), affected a total of approximately 6.2 km. The work involved conventional widening of the existing road in situ, alternating between symmetrical and asymmetrical interventions. The design provides for the construction of two 3-lane carriageways with hard shoulders in each direction (compared with the existing two lanes in each direction).

Lot 1N forms a part of the overall project and the new section, of which the first 4.5 km opened to traffic on 30 July 2021, with the next 1.5 km opened in June 2022, is included in the first part of the widening to three lanes of the section between the Florence South and Incisa junctions.

The newly opened section has improved traffic flow between the Florence North, Florence Scandicci, Florence Impruneta and Florence South junctions, whilst also significantly easing congestion on local roads in the metropolitan area, above all in the urban districts of Florence South, Bagno a Ripoli, Ponte a Ema, Grassina and Antella.

Work on Lot 1N is due to be completed by the end of 2024, marking significant progress for the Bagno a Ripoli area. The planned works include construction of a new car park serving the Santa Maria Annunziata Hospital, construction of the new Via dell’Antella, the provision of new cycleways and pedestrian footpaths, redevelopment of the area around the San Giorgio Church, and renewal work on the Via Romanelli, Via Lavagnini, Via di Campigliano and Via di Vacciano. Corten cladding is also due to be installed on Via Chiantigiana, alongside attractive green space. This latter intervention will play a key role in integrating the widened motorway with the surrounding area.

These works mark a decisive step towards completing Autostrade per l'Italia’s major investment plan for Tuscany as a whole.

The rapid completion of Lot 1N by 2024 marks an important step in developing the area’s infrastructure, improving the quality of life of the residents of Bagno a Ripoli, Grassina and Antella.

Key infrastructure

  • Viaduct VI01 – The raising and widening of the existing viaduct from 3 to 6 lands plus hard shoulders
  • Artificial Tunnel GA01 – Construction of an artificial tunnel connecting the areas on either side of the A1 motorway
  • Upgrade of the ramps serving the Florence South junction

Lot 2B + 1 South

Lot 2B+1S regards the widening of a further 11.6 km stretch of motorway in the direction of Incisa, between 306+985 and 318+511, is a continuation of the work already carried out at Lot 1 North.

Work on the two lots began in April 2022, with the following to be carried out:

  • For Lot 1S, widening in situ, alternating between symmetrical and asymmetrical interventions;
  • For Lot 2B, where the motorway passes under the San Donato hill, the construction of a new three-lane southbound section, near to the new San Donato tunnel. The northbound part of the project uses the two existing tunnels (used for traffic heading in the same direction) and therefore has (2+2) running lanes.

Lot 2B also involves, topographic remodelling will be carried out at km 309 with the aim of stabilising the hillside on which the new motorway will be built, and which is currently affected by various types of movement.

The design also includes construction of the Ribuio (Lot 2B) and Massone (Lot 1 South) viaducts, as well as the upgrade of the ramps for the Rignano parking area.

New San Donato tunnel

  • This will constitute the new three-lane southbound section
  • Boring from both ends of the tunnel will take place at the same time
  • Innovative technologies will be used to reduce the impact on existing tunnels

San Donato tunnel and topographic remodelling of the San Donato area in numbers

  • 2026: boring of the tunnel to be completed
  • 960 metres of tunnel to be bored
  • 210 m2 of tunnel section to be bored
  • handling of approximately 1.5 million m3 of earth from the lots to be used to stabilise the hillside in the San Donato area

Community initiatives

  • A car park serving the Santa Maria Annunziata Hospital - PZ10
  • A new cycleway and footpath in the hospital car park
  • New Antella road – IN04
  • Urban redevelopment - San Giorgio church
