Description of the project

The project consists of the modernisation and widening to four lanes of the A1 motorway, over a total section of approximately 16.9 km, between the Milan South toll station and the Lodi junction. This a response to the significant increase in traffic using this section in recent years, with the aim of achieving continuous improvements in the level of service provided and in motorway safety. Following submission of the draft design to local authorities, the consents process began. The process was completed with the positive outcome to the Services Conference in March 2017.

Work began in the first half of 2023 and will last for a total of 36 months. To ensure completion on schedule, preparatory work began in November 2022.

From an operational viewpoint, the work is taking place in three blocks. This means that work is taking place in stages (alternating between the northbound and southbound carriageways), thus ensuring that traffic keeps moving and avoiding the closure of the hard shoulder on extended sections of the same carriageway.
