Description of the project

The project involves the widening of the section between Bologna Arcoveggio (km 0+871) and the existing Ferrara South junction (km 33+738) to three lanes, covering a total stretch of approximately 32.9 km.  The project also includes:

  • the upgrade of the acceleration and deceleration lanes at existing junctions (Bologna Arcoveggio, Bologna Interporto, Altedo, Ferrara South) and of the Bentivoglio service area;
  • the demolition of 30 overpasses and the refurbishment of 26 of them.

Following submission of the draft design to local authorities, at the time of the EIA procedure, which came to a positive conclusion in 2018, the project was declared compliant with urban planning regulations in 2022 following the Services Conference held on 10 May 2022. The expropriation constraint was then established and agreement was reached between central government and Emilia Romagna Regional Authority. Having completed the procedures involved in publication of the list of expropriations, the detailed design was submitted to the Ministry. Whilst awaiting the Grantor’s consent and the accompanying declaration of public interest, certain preparatory works were undertaken (so-called “Lot 0”), including provisional restoration of hard shoulders and the setup of base camp and the various worksite camps.

Community initiatives

These initiatives, financed and designed by Autostrade per l'Italia, regard the installation of noise barriers:

  • Access to the metropolitan area: strategic project for access to Bologna metropolitan area and the Province of Ferrara
  • Green engineering: 17.3 hectares of new green space to integrate the new roads and 4.5 hectares of compensatory tree planting;
  • Air quality: -63% NOx and -3% PM10s;
  • Noise reduction: around 10 km of noise barriers + 2 direct interventions;
  • Water protection: all the drainage system closed and controlled;
  • Feeder roads: upgrade of the S.P. 20 and the construction of 4 new roundabouts;
  • Local community initiatives: 2.7km of new cycleways;
  • Recovery of excavated materials: 2.3 million m3 produced and 1.5 million m3 reused (approximately 70%);
  • Photovoltaic energy: installation of an additional 3.3 MW of photovoltaic capacity.
